The First Official Motorcycle Turns 127 Years Old

It was 127 years ago this August 29 that Gottlieb Gaimler first patented the motorcycle. By today’s standards, the contraption that appears to be part bicycle, part writing desk and part old-timey sewing machine is one queer looking beast. Though, it must be admitted that it is by no means unattractive.

This first motorcycle was Daimler’s attempt at housing Nicolaus Otto’s four-stroke engine. Though the original bike perished in a fire some 80 years ago, Mercedes has a replica that turned heads at the recently-completed Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
