According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, motorcyclist fatalities dropped 29.6% between 2008 and 2009.
- 2008: 560 fatalities
- 2009: 394 fatalities
However, some observers have questioned whether these findings tell the whole story. For instance, most traffic statistics such as these are charted against a standard of per Vehicle Miles Traveled, or VMT. Since total motorcycle registrations in CA are down, so too could be the number of vehicle miles traveled, thereby skewing the results.
